There are curently two non-technical tourist trails leading to the summit of Mt Kinabalu.

The traditional trail begins at Timpohon Gate and ascends steadily up the south face of the mountain. Over the years, this trail has evolved into a busy walkway or even a trade route, with reinforced steps, handrails and even shelters that provide drinking water and sanitation facilities.

For those who have already climbed the mountain on the traditional trail or who want a wilder, more challenging route up the mountain, there is a newer, less developed trail which provides a slightly different perspective - at a price. This route is easily two to three hours longer than the traditional trail. The reviews are mixed. Some people feel that the extra effort is well worth it. Some consider it a waste of time and some others love it because it gives them something to show off to the "wimps" on the traditional trail.

Clearly marked but without a grand entrance, the Mesilau trail begins at Mesilau Nature Resort, a relatively new and somewhat more upmarket version of the old Kinabalu Park HQ. For travellers seeking budget accommodations, the Kinabalu Park HQ still provides more choice and variety. The journey to the starting point of the Mesilau trail from Kinabalu Park HQ takes 30 minutes or all day, depending on the condition of the bus.
