This place is called Baishuitai or White Water Terraces. In the midst of all the greenery and cultivated terraces in the mountainous region, is this natural phenomenon formed by calcium carbonate crystals deposited over 30,000 years. At the top of the terraces, is a pool, the source of the spring. The locals call it Heavenly Pool. Water rich in minerals descend one terrace after another, depositing and building up the crusts of calcium deposits over time.
Local legend had it that a fairy accidentally spilled milk over the terraces, colouring them white. Believe it or not, everything looks surreal over here.
Baishuitai is 3 hours’ drive from Zhongdian (Shangrila).
