I have an unexplained love for Javanese antiquities. These Hindu/Buddhist shrines, often situated at misty heights, are a constant source of inspiration for me. They are evidence of a great, albeit somewhat mysterious civilisation with roots in India.
Gedung Songo located near Semarang in Central Java is my favourites. The shrine themselves are not very impressive, but the setting and backdrop are quite magical. I’ve only visited this place once in 1997. I hope they are still around when I visit again.
