An eruption of Mount Semeru, a volcano in the East Java province of the Indonesian island of Java, began on 4 December 2021. The eruption began after heavy precipitation caused the collapse of the lava dome at the summit. Pyroclastic flows and lahars damaged at least 5,205 homes and several public buildings.
This very interesting video is a drone footage exploring the path of destruction from that eruption just days after the disaster. The drone took off from the outskirts of Lumajang, a town practically due east of the volcano. Note that this is not the normal route of ascent for climbers. The standard climbing route begins at Ranupani in the NE.
As you can see from, the view of the mountain in the east has been unblocked by the destruction of the forest. The pilot turned the drone back just shy of the smoking crater.
