When I was young, I often heard stories about people who were lost in the mountains and how they found their way back by following some river or stream. Do you know that that could be the worst thing you can do when you are lost and people are looking for you?
The videos I’m sharing here show “Beast Runner”, expat hiking enthusiast living in Taiwan. He goes on missions to find lost or missing hikers. Many of them are found dead in creeks or gorges. The month-long expedition ended with the successful recovery of the hiker’s body. He was challenging mother nature, having gone out alone during a storm without any safety equipment.
Following a stream or a creek which often lies in a gorge is precisely the wrong thing to do. The steep descent to the stream can be dangerous. Many of the victims Beast Runner found fell on their way down to the stream. Apart from that the flow of water is also unpredictable as it could have rained upstream. Going downhill has another disadvantage. The search area is widened and the forest cover will also make it difficult for search and rescue teams. It’s sad that these hikers had died. Let’s learn a lesson from these tragedies and not let them happen to us.
